PEDORTHICS

A pedorthist manufactures, fits and modifies foot orthotics and footwear for the purposes of alleviating painful or debilitating conditions and providing assistance for abnormalities or limited actions of the feet and area around them.

Custom Orthotics

Orthotics are custom made shoe inserts individually designed to control the alignment and motion of the feet and legs during gait.
Drawing from expertise in a variety of orthotic techniques, our pedorthist provides custom made devices which meet the specific requirements of each patient. With access to a wide range of thermoplastic and multi-density foam materials, we are able to make the cutting-edge orthotics for our patients.

THE PROCESS
Assessment

The first step in the orthotic therapy process is a detailed biomechanical examination. Through physical examination, gait analysis, footwear evaluation, and review of your injury history, a more thorough understanding of the nature and cause of your problem is gained.

Casting

Over 30 measurements of joint alignment and motion are taken from the hip to the foot. Then plaster molds of the feet are made to capture the contours and angular relationships of the bones and joints in their “neutral” positions.

Manufacturing

Our orthotics are made by vacuum forming and shaping heat moldable materials onto 3-dimensional positive casts of your feet. We use a variety of materials with a wide range of support and cushioning properties. These include rigid and semi-rigid thermoplastics as well as low, medium, and high density foams.

Fitting and follow-up

When the devices are dispensed, the length, fit, and function of your orthotics are carefully evaluated. Instructions for wear and information about the adjustment process are given. Then, a follow-up program is initiated to monitor your progress and, if necessary, fine-tune the devices to your feet.

Video Gait Analysis

The naked eye is the simplest and most common tool used to assess human movement. However, the human eye has its limitations. Many foot and leg motions in running are too rapid for the naked eye to detect. When a more precise gait analysis is required, video is the method of choice.

Each participant is videotaped as they stand, walk, and run on a motorized treadmill. A variety of camera angles are used to isolate and capture motion of the foot and leg. With the aid of slow motion and frame-by-frame video playback, the alignment and function of the lower limbs is evaluated. Improper motions and postures which may predispose the foot and leg to injury are identified (e.g., excessive pronation, knock-kneed postures, increased leg rotation, improper toe-off angles, etc.). The influences of your current footwear and/or orthotic devices are also evaluated.

We sit down with patients to review and discuss the findings and implications of their gait analysis. Relevant biomechanical factors are highlighted and their role in contributing to overuse injury explained. Injury prevention and reduction strategies are also discussed (e.g., orthotics, footwear, stretching, etc.).
