ImPACT Concussion Testing
Computer-based testing for head injuries/concussions/pre-season assessments.
Head injuries and concussions are common in sport and accidental injuries. Research has shown that many concussions are undiagnosed and frequently athletes return to physical activity prematurely. This can increase symptoms, prolong recovery and predispose an individual to further injury .
Early diagnosis and ongoing monitoring has been shown to improve recovery from concussions. Physical rest and brain rest are key, especially for children and adolescents and individuals with previous concussions.
Concussions are often difficult to diagnose, so special evaluation tools have been developed to evaluate brain recovery-tests of memory, response times and balance and coordination. These can be done “on the sidelines” or in the office.
ImPACT testing is a research based, computerized test that allows sensitive evaluation of higher mental functioning skills that may be altered following a concussion. ImPACT testing is more sensitive than clinical, office based tests, and is accessible from any computer. It can be used, in conjunction with clinical evaluation over time, to determine a safe return to sport.
At Pivot Sport Medicine and Orthopaedics, ImPACT testing is available for individuals and teams. Athletes and individuals with accidental head injuries can be referred for assessment of concussion symptoms and post-concussion syndrome with one of the Sport Medicine Physicians. Following this initial assessment ImPACT testing will be arranged if required.
Coaches, parents and athletes may also book appointments for pre-season assessments. For more information, contact us at info@pivotsmo.com, or to book an assessment call (416) 767-4868.
