Sport Medicine

“The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patient in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease.”

— Thomas Edison

Sport medicine is the study and practice of medical principles related to the science of sports and physical activity, particularly in the areas of:

  • Diagnosis and treatment
  • Injury prevention
  • Sports training and athletic performance

  • Sport medicine is the medicine and science of physical activity and sport for individuals of all ages and abilities. It promotes well being through physical activity and prevents illness due to inactivity.

What is a Sport Medicine Physician?

Sport Medicine Physicians have specialized training and skills in the care of active individuals of all ages and skill levels. They have an interest in health promotion through physical activity, disease prevention or modification, lifelong exercise and injury assessment, diagnosis and treatment. They have expertise in specialized areas of athlete care such as exercise in pregnancy, female athlete triad, the aging athlete and sport team concerns.

Sport Medicine Physicians are able to assist in the care of all non- surgical muscle and joint problems including osteoarthritis, sprains and strains and overuse conditions. They are knowledgeable about rehabilitation and bracing or splinting of injuries. Physical activity prescription for patients with chronic diseases such as osteoporosis, diabetes, heart disease and asthma is also provided by Sport Medicine Physicians.

Sport Physicians are also able to care for teams at home or abroad and can provide information about athlete nutrition, injury prevention and travel concerns. They work collaboratively with other practitioners, therapists and trainers and with different sport organizations.

Sport Medicine Physicians bridge the gap between the Family Physician and the orthopaedic surgeon or other specialists. Your Family Doctor can refer you to a Sport Medicine Physician.
