Performing Arts Medicine

Performing artists are very special, talented and gifted individuals and as such have needs that are somewhat different than other populations.  In order to provide optimal care for performing artists, the medical professional must understand the distinct needs of each artist or athlete and the demands of their respective performing art or sport. Performing arts medicine addresses the physiological and psychological needs of the artist with the goal of obtaining peak performance. It focuses on helping artists and arts teachers deal with the psychological stressors inherent in the field. Arts medicine specialists deal with performance preparation and issues of arousal, audition anxiety, mood disturbances, sleep disorders, injury prevention and recovery, inadequate nutrition and low energy availability, post performance depression, career transition and decision about career changes.  Discussion of possible support services is also addressed.

A medical referral is necessary from a family physician, sport medicine doctor or any other physician involved in the care of the athlete or performer.
